The theme from Doctor Who has been voted the greatest of any sci-fi TV show in a new online poll.

Written by Ron Grainer and originally created by music technology pin-up Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, this iconic music has since been re-interpreted several times, most recently by Coldcut at the Electric Proms.

The jaunty theme from Red Dwarf came second in the poll, which was run by Total Sci-Fi. Mark Snow's eerie X-Files music came third.

The full Top 10 is as follows:

1) Doctor Who
2) Red Dwarf
3) The X-Files
4) Buffy the Vampire Slayer
5) Star Trek
6) Thunderbirds
7) The Twilight Zone
8) Battlestar Galactica
9) Quantum Leap
10) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
