It was surely one of the worst-kept secrets in video games, but Guitar Hero creator Activision has been good enough to confirm that it's working on a new title called DJ Hero.

Speaking to CNBC, company CEO Bobby Kotick said: "We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year which is a turntable that you can actually play competitively, spin discs and mix on."

DJ Tiësto rather stole Activision's thunder when, in December 2008, he revealed that he'd been invited to help on the DJ Hero project in a newsletter. That said, rumours that the game was in development had been circulating long before that.

It's all official now, though - DJ Hero is expected to ship at some point in 2009. This will put it in direct competition with Genco Interactive and 7 Studios' Scratch: The Ultimate DJ, which is also scheduled for this year.
