Fleet Foxes' debut album has been honoured as the greatest album sleeve of 2008. The self-titled release took the Vinyl Art prize for the best sleeve of the previous 12 months.

A selection of 50 images made up the longlist for the annual prize which drew 3,000 online votes and which will lead to sleeve art exhibitions in London, Birmingham, Norwich and Northampton in the UK.

The album by Seattle's Fleet Foxes features the 1559 painting Netherlandish Proverbs, by Pieter Bruegel The Elder. It's not the first time Bruegel's work has appeared on a rock 'n' roll sleeve. His painting The Triumph Of Death was used in 1977 by Black Sabbath on their Greatest Hits album.

The classics theme continued with Coldplay's Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends - a reproduction of Eugene Delacroix's 1830 painting Liberty Leading The People - came third.
