Ask MusicRadar: what's the best Xmas song of all time?
UPDATE: Nominations for the best Xmas song of all time have now closed. You can continue to nominate kick-ass alternative festive anthems below...
It's 1st December, which means MusicRadar's Advent Calendar has begun and (almost as importantly) so has the countdown to Christmas. What better way to celebrate than with two very special, festive editions of Ask MusicRadar: what's the best Xmas song of all time? And what's the most kick-ass alternative Xmas anthem?
1. What's the best Xmas song of all time?
Is it a chestnut roasting-classic like The Christmas Song? Is it a hit from 1973 (surely Yuletide's glam rock year) and Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody or Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday? Or is it The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl's ode to booze, bickering and the boys of the NYPD Choir, Fairytale Of New York?
Hell, it might even be The Darkness's Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) (clue: it's not).
Basically, if it's a song (a) About Christmas; and (b) You think it's the best Xmas song of all time, we want to know!
2. What's the most kick-ass alternative Xmas anthem?
Think about the above festive classics… and then think the opposite! We're after the greatest alternative Xmas anthem ever.
Is it an ice-cool indie offering disguised under a layer of sleigh bells like Low's Just Like Christmas? Is it an old-school hip-hop cut like Run DMC's Christmas In Hollis? Or is it Oceansize's post-rock interpretation of Walking In The Air?
Similar rules apply. If it's a song (a) About Christmas, (b) It's 'alternative' (i.e. It's not Slade, it's not something your Gran know and you won't find it on The Best Christmas Album In The World Ever!); and (c) You think it's the best, we want to know!
