Hot on the heels of M-Audio's MicroTrack II comes another new portable digital recorder in the shape of Olympus's LS-10. Unlike some of the company's previous recorders, this one's designed specifically for musicians.
The LS-10 can record at 24-bit/96kHz and supports the WAV, MP3 and WMA formats. It comes with a healthy 2GB of onboard memory, and there's also an SD/SDHC removable media card slot.
Stereo microphones are built into the LS-10, and you can record via the 3.5mm mic and line inputs too. There's a 3.5mm headphone output, plus built-in stereo speakers so you can instantly listen to your recordings out loud.
Finished in aluminium, the LS-10 weighs 165g including batteries. We're told that the device can run for up to 12 hours on a pair of AA batteries, though it can also be powered by the optional AC adapter.
Other optional accessories include an infrared remote control, carrying bag, conference microphones, tripod and rechargeable battery, all of which can be purchased separately.
One 'extra' that the LS-10 does ship with is a copy of Steinberg's Cubase LE 4. This is a 48-track recording application that's based on the company's flagship Cubase DAW.
Compatible with Mac and PC, the LS-10 is scheduled to start shipping in January 2008 and has a projected street price of $400. You can find more details on the Olympus website.
