Rare Royal Guitar Up For Auction
A rare acoustic guitar owned by an ill-fated 18th century Royal princess is up for auction next week.
The guitar, thought to have been bought at public auction on Bond Street in the early 1800s, is estimated to sell for between £2,000-3,000 when it goes under the hammer on Tuesday 4th November 2008 at Bonhams New Bond Street salerooms.
It is thought to have been owned by the only legitimate grandchild of King George III, Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817) - who would have been Queen of England had she lived past the age of 21.
Charlotte was a gifted musician though and played a number of instruments. Her death during childbirth was mourned nationally, on a scale similar to that which followed the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
