Steve Vai has never been afraid to incorporate elements of extremely eclectic genres into his music, and Freak Show Excess from his 2005 album Real Illusions: Reflections is a prime example.
In this video lesson, Steve Vai explains the ideas and writing process behind the Bulgarian-wedding-music-influenced Freak Show Excess, all from the comfort of his own Mothership recording studio.
This is part one of a two-part Steve Vai special. Check out part two of Steve in the studio here.
