Chad Smith’s Pearl drumkit gets a tattoo

Chad Smith's Pearl Masters Series drumkit has had a makeover for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' next tour. The stencil-inspired design was created by tattooist to the stars Henk 'Hanky Panky' Schiffmacher, whose relationship with Chad and the gang goes "way back". Henk lives in Amsterdam, Holland, by the way…

The drums have been painted with classic symbols from tribal and tattoo art, with many of the designs representing "a reflection of Chad's life - completely designed to the specs and wishes of Chad himself".

The Chili Peppers' sticksman commissioned the makeover at a dinner party in Amsterdam by shouting at Henk across the table: "You need to pimp my drums!"

Schiffmacher plans to eventually auction the kit to raise money for Orange Babies - a charity helping HIV infected mothers to have healthy babies. If you happen to be passing through Holland, you can see the kit for yourself on display at Rock Palace, Den Haag - before Smith gives it some character of his own on tour…
