The place for music makers
In pictures: a countdown of the very best
Rhythm Magazine, Thu 5 Nov 2009, 3:38 pm UTC
Following the 50 greatest drummers of all time: part 1, here, as promised, is the second half. These are the top 25 sticksmen to ever grace a throne - compiled by our friends at Rhythm Magazine but chosen by the all-voting, all-drumming and all-opinionated readers.
So, if you missed part 1, start here. If not, sit back, pick up a stick to twirl (or hit yourself with, if you don’t agree with the order - hey, it’s reader-voted, remember!?) and scroll through to find the very greatest. First up at 25: Journey’s Steve Smith…
From filling arenas with Journey, Steve Smith has become a connoisseur and collector of global grooves on Vitalization, with his fusion band Vital Information.
“Steve Smith’s DVDs demonstrate that he is a drum scholar of the highest order, while his ability to play pop, rock, jazz and fusion make him the perfect all-rounder.” (Frank Drew, Stockport)

I'm glad that Ian Paice is on the list...Its not where he belongs though. He's definitely top five. I've been lucky enough to see him with dp a few times and he's absolutely amazing. Some of these people haven't been drumming long enough to be judged as "best" if you ask me. And um please how does Ringo starr even make it on the list? They over dubbed his parts left and right and found other drummers when he couldn't carry the beat needed.....
With all his passion, technique and magical playing.........Portnoy should be at the top 3............and.......U2's Mullen deserves also a place among the greatest 50!!
Great list, but where is Steve Jordan?
Why is Dave Grohl up there? And Lars, I would say he was good when he was younger but a modern Lars shouldn't be up there. The top four is the usual latter. Though the Dream Theater guy is a new one I've seen there and I think I won't debate that.
No Dave Lombardo; no Gene Hoglan; no Dennis Chambers????
Shit list.
Travis Parker superior to Chris Adler ???
- Very interresting... LOL
Lars Ulrich, Ringo Star and Dave Grohl should even be on the list, never mind a head of Vinnie Colaiuta.
The problem with these lists is that people just vote for who like regardless of how good they actually are
Hi guys - Mike from the MusicRadar team here. Just a quick one to say this list (and the first part) were independently voted for by readers of Rhythm magazine - no input from the mag guys or us on Radar. Looks like you've got some strong opinions (us too - wot no Leibezeit?) on the choices so let's do our own. Look out for a Ask MusicRadar poll in the very near future where, like all our polls, you'll do the voting. Watch this space.
No Jaki Leibezeit? Ridiculous. What is wrong with you?
no Larry Mullen jnr or Tico Torres? You guys are a joke with these lists
