Acoustic guitarist Kaki King's top tips on how to break through writer's block

Kaki King's inventive approach to acoustic guitar is constantly inspiring, so her songwriting tips for players struggling to come up with new ideas are definitely worth hearing.

In her latest video with Elixir® Strings above, Kaki discusses the idea of pushing yourself out of comfort zones as a guitarist using simple methods.

As she explains, one way is to experiment with new tunings to unlock creative ideas. And when it comes to changing your preconceptions as a player, even changing the guitar strings you use can help.

"When I first tried Elixirs I was thinking a coated string would probably sound a little more mellow," says Kaki. "And it took maybe three days of playing and I was like, these things sound and play really, really well.

"I remember the feel being great and the feel not changing for a very long time," she adds. "That was when I was convinced."

Kaki uses Ovation acoustic guitars with low tunings, and needed a light string that could offer stability. She chose Elixir® Acoustic 80/20 Bronze strings with Polyweb® coating.

"A typical string, especially with the amount I was playing at the time daily for hours and hours, at the end of the week they would be rusty and dead," Kaki explains.

"But Elixirs weren't like that, they sort of settled in and then they stayed there for a long time. And then the playability just kept me around."
