Laney welcomes all instruments to the party with refreshed Audiohub lineup – feature-packed combos for guitars, bass, keys and more
We often think of amplification as a specialist enterprise. There is the guitar amp. There is the bass amp. You need a separate amp for your acoustic guitar or keyboard. But the Audiohub range from Laney, newly refreshed with four generously spec’d combos, challenges this assumption.
The Audiohub tagline reads “All instruments welcome!” and it makes good on that with a range offering combos in a variety of sizes and power outputs, each catering to a number of different musical contexts.
All of the Audiohub amps present players with XLR and 1/4” inputs, Bluetooth connectivity and an auxiliary input for playing external audio, and there is a DI output for sending your signal direct to a mixing desk or PA.
Also, the series is expandable via Bluetooth. Players can hook up two Audiohub amps via Bluetooth and run them as a full stereo rig.
There’s the AH60, offering 60-watts, three channels, and an amplifier that is 10 per cent more smaller and much lighter than its predecessor. The most compact amp in the range, the AH60 is designed for buskers and solo performers, and features a single 8” driver and piezo tweeter.
But the bedroom musician would get a lot of use out of it too, both as a practice tool and for recording. All of these combos ship with a headphones output for silent practice and a USB-C for recording.
The AH100 scales up the Audiohub format to four channels with 100-watts driving a 10” speaker and piezo tweeter.
This is a loud 100-watter; Laney promises it has more than enough oomph to fill a classroom or to hold its own in a small venue, such as a church service where a multi-source amplification can be invaluable.
At 200-watts, the AH200 presents itself as a workhorse for small venues and educational settings. With five channels, it comes into its own in the classroom, allowing the teacher and four students to plug into the same amp source, and to be loud enough to be heard. It is fitted with a 12” speaker and a 1” compression horn.
The flagship AH400 is a real monster. With 400-watts, a 15” speaker and 1” compression driver, it has the oomph to handle large classrooms and larger venues – especially with its DI output allowing you to send your signal through the PA system.
Again, it has the five-channels to accommodate a full band setup, with comprehensive EQ control. You could stick e-drums on one channel, vocals on another, then bass, guitar and keys on the other three.
Channels 1 and 2 come equipped with Bass, Treble, Level and Effect controls, and it shares the global 5-band EQ as its siblings, sliders illuminating in red when the amp is switched on.
One of the neat things about this series is that the features shared by each amp. They all have the powerful 5-band EQ. They all have onboard effects – reverb, echo/delay and modulation – with each effect selectable via a simple dial and parameter control.
Your reverb options comprise room, plate and hall. There is a standard issue echo that could work gangbusters on electric guitar, and a “Karaoke Echo” for vocals. These effects are footswitchable, too. The Audiohub series’ universal voltage internal PSU makes them travel well, too.
Among the array of connections on the back of the amplifiers, you’ll find a button marked “Illumination” that offers the tantalising prospect of red, white, blue and green baffle lighting, the Audiohub range borrowing the downlit baffle aesthetic from Laney’s superlative FRFR speaker range.
We could see this being particularly useful in a classroom setting where the teacher has one group of students playing through an AH100 lit up in blue, another in green, and another in red. But, maybe even more importantly, it will look cool onstage, whether you're playing guitar, bass, e-drums, keyboards or just have a mic in your hand.
