SOMA Labs at Synth Week 26: Put gestures in… Get music out… Meet FLUX: The incredible, intuitive instrument that you play without touching it

SYNTH WEEK 2026: We all know that making music is like magic. But SOMA Labs FLUX – the instrument that plays without touch – is elevating that entire notion to the max.

FLUX is a high-end synthesizer inspired by the classic Theremin – the original no-touch-required spooky-sounding synth that was invented way back in 1920, becoming the world's first source of synthetic sound – but one which takes the Theremin's principles and simplicity and creates it's own brand-new way to make complex music with speed and ease.

Unlike the Theremin – which works by virtue of the capacitive coupling of hands and antennae – FLUX is based on magnetic principles. Two small magnetic bows, held between your fingers, interact with a multipolar sensor that tracks position and movement across three axes in real time. Your right hand controls pitch and volume, while your left hand shapes timbre.

So every gesture becomes music. It's that simple.

And with an on-board quantization function (alongside an adjustment parameter for vibrato) FLUX has a stable, even, and clearly marked note scale. This makes FLUX much easier to learn and to intone more cleanly than any Theremin.

There's up to 37 synthesis algorithms, a nine-octave range, mono/duo/polyphonic modes, spatial FX, and a custom Hi-End DAC to keep everything sounding great.

FLUX delivers the expressiveness of a classical instrument with the full power of modern DSP.

And there's more.

The additional FLUX Breakout Box turns every FLUX gesture into live CV and MIDI output.

That's pitch, velocity, six bipolar CV channels from the timbral keyboard, and a dedicated Tilt CV, all of which can be fed directly into your Eurorack, or analog gear, or made digital in your DAW.

And in standalone mode, the FLUX box works as a MIDI-to-CV converter for any setup. It's 6HP Eurorack-mountable, features a MIDI and MPE output and is USB-C powered.

Part of the SOMA Labs family

SOMA Laboratory have created their own unique reputation for building musical synthesizers for those who dare to explore sound beyond the ordinary.

Founded in 2016 following the success of the 'organismic' synthesizer LYRA-8 by inventor and sound engineer Vlad Kreimer, SOMA delivers instruments that blend cutting-edge technology with the legacy of analog synthesis and intuitive design.

Every instrument empowers musicians to push creative boundaries and redefine sonic possibilities. SOMA is where art and technology create new sound worlds.

"We developed FLUX with the aim to create a modern instrument for academic music, offering powerful sonic tools such as distortion, complex FM and physical modelling of non-existent, surrealistic musical instruments," the team at SOMA say.

"We invite modern performers and composers to use FLUX in their work."
