There are arguments to be made that hardware drum machines are a bit of an anachronism in the modern age.

Software drum tools – including the stock ones included in most DAWs – are so powerful that it could seem counterintuitive to limit yourself to a single instrument for beat making. There is, however, something special about the physical process of programming, playing and tweaking rhythms using hardware.

The key to making the most of a drum machine in the modern age is to lean into its limitations and characteristics. As we discuss in this month’s cover feature, if you really learn the capabilities of a machine and how far they can be pushed, a hardware drum machine can still be the perfect tool to unlock your creativity.

In 2024, the world of synthesis is paradoxically both more accessible than ever before, and also more of a deep and baffling rabbit hole. On the one hand, it’s possible to pick up excellent synths for a very reasonable amount of money, and it’s perfectly possible to make excellent music just engaging with these instruments on a surface level of preset sounds and basic controls.

In many cases, a well-deployed vocal sample can be the element that makes an electronic track. It can provide the hook that means your track sticks in the mind of listeners, or provide the emotive heart to an otherwise sterile electronic composition.

Vocal sampling can be tricky, however, and it’s easy to do badly. Whether it’s lazy use of an obvious acapella, clunky and unnatural changes to pitch and timing, or simply a vocal that doesn’t suit the underlying track, a bad vocal sample can spoil a production just as easily as save it. When it’s done well though, the vocal ‘flip’ is an artform all by itself.

This issue, we’re taking a deep dive into the practicalities of vocal sampling, from how to source and extract the right vocal, to creative ways to edit and manipulate your sounds.

Experimental music has a long and rich history. From the post-war modernist composers through free jazz innovators to ’90s IDM circuit benders, there is a wealth of music out there built around bending or breaking the rules of traditional composition.

Being ‘experimental’ in your music making doesn’t necessarily mean being totally abstract though. Sometimes ‘experimenting’ can simply mean stepping out of your own personal comfort zone, or seeing how you can expand your way of working. That could mean trying to incorporate a new sound or approach into your established style, or stripping your music back to just its most minimal elements.

Spanning from mainstream chart hits to outsider underground parties, house music is still a dominant force on dancefloors from Ibiza to Chicago to Japan. It’s split and cross-pollinated into a multitude of sub-genres, spanning electro house, deep house, micro house, lo-fi, booty house... We could go on and on.

So how to tackle the concept of making house music in 2023? This issue, we start by going back to the fundamentals – the classic sounds and techniques that form the backbone of house music in all its forms. We explore some of the general rules and classic sounds of house, which are useful to know – even if you ultimately decide to subvert them.

In 1999, for example, FM ran a feature about the varied ways the Millennium Bug was going to dramatically impact your music making. We can all, surely, remember at least a few products hailed as ‘game changers’ that actually disappeared from view after having very little impact.

At the risk of falling into this trap though, there are a number of emergent technologies kicking about right now that do feel like they could have a significant impact on how we make music in the future. We often dedicate a lot of FM to discussing the specifics of sound design, production and mixing, all of which are complex and varied disciplines worth studying and exploring, but none are of any use without an actual song to work with.

To quote one of this month’s featured artists, Lewis Thompson, “the production should support the song”. While Thompson is often working with pop vocalists, the principle is true even for the most experimental, minimal or ambient tracks – unless you’ve a core song worth developing, no amount of mixing or mastering skill can paper over a lack of ideas.

This month’s free headline plugin is W.A. Production’s’ Vocal Limiter, a nifty little plugin that’s tailor-made for vocal frequencies, that would usually set you back $20 when bought separately. For the issue’s free sample selection box, we’ve stuck with the cinematic theme, with Cyclick’s Soundtrack Trailers pack (think pounding, giant drums, suspenseful prep piano chords and scratchy instruments) and Groove Criminals’ Cinematic Hits (atmospheric textures/beds, stings, low-end rumbles and suitably epic piano samples).
