Free music software round-up: Week 33

It's always nice to have the chance to download a piece of software for free when it previously cost real money, and Cakewalk is now giving you that chance with SFZ+. Read on to find out more.

While you're here, you can check out three new synths (two modular, one subtractive) and an open-source lookahead limiter.

If you've got a new free music software release, make sure you let us know about it by emailing musicradar.pressreleases@futurenet.com with all the details.

Inorganic1

Asymptotic Valley Inorganic1

Platform/format: PC/VST Download

This is a 2-oscillator subtractive synth that also comes with an adjustable oscilloscope. There's a multi-mode filter, while the sound can be further shaped by using the delay and reverb effects.

Zephod blok alpha version

Zephod [BLOK] (Alpha version)

Platform/format: PC/VST Download

If you've always wanted to get your hands dirty with modular synthesis but didn't fancy paying for the privilege, check this puppy out. Offering all the synth modules you'd expect (oscillators, filters, envelopes etc) it lets you connect them up via an interface that promises to be easy to use. This Alpha version is free, but the release edition will cost €35.

Kx-Modulad

KX77FREE Kx-Modulad v2

Platform/format: PC/VST Download

Another modular synth, this one has just been updated to version 2.0. Additions include a stereo SF2 player, MIDI learn, a new skin and a LP 18 filter. Improvements have been made to existing features, too, and Kx-Modulad still features the WaveTracer, which enables you to make your own additive waveforms.

Christian budde lookahead limiter

Christian Budde Lookahead Limiter

Platform/format: PC/VST Download

Another open-source release from Christian Budde, this peak stop lookahead limiter is said to have a smooth attack envelope and an adjustable release curve. If you don't fancy messing with the settings yourself, there are nine presets to work with.

Cakewalk sfz+

Cakewalk SFZ+

Platform/format: PC/VST, DX Download

SFZ+ is designed to do one very specific job - play SoundFonts - but it does it very well. It's multitimbral, has multiple stereo outputs and built-in stereo effects and looks nice too. Having previously been listed at $60, the price on the Cakewalk store has dropped to $0.00 dollars, so give it a look.
