Pete Doherty solo album surfaces, features Graham Coxon

Last Of The English Roses drops 2 March

Talk of a Pete Doherty solo album has been running the mill for years. But now, finally, the former Libertines/current Babyshambles mainman has finished it, and recruited Blur guitarist Graham Coxon for all but one of its 12 tracks.

Don't expect any solo snippets you may have heard during that time to appear on the album, though. Doherty scrapped all previous work in favour of rewriting and recording everything from scratch in just one month.

Graham Coxon

Doherty discussed his Graham Coxon coup with the NME: "I don't know how Graham ended up on the album. I suppose it was jobs for the boys. Seeing as I'm lucid and being quite honest, I'll just say Graham's an amazing fella. I was forced to push myself as a musician."

"I see it [the album] as an introverted, self-contained snapshot of a time capturing four weeks of my life", Pete Doherty

The still-untitled album is set to be released on 9 March, preceded by a single Last Of The English Roses a week before. As well as Coxon, Doherty recruited singer Dot Allison for co-vocals and Babyshambles bandmates Mik Whitnall, Adam Ficek and Drew McConnell for everything else.

Considering that's the current Babyshambles line-up in full, we're guessing this is a very Babyshambles-esque record.

The Libertines?

Doherty also explained that he's not expecting huge sales: "I'll be pleased to hear if people like it. But I don't see it as a commercial album. I see it as an introverted, self-contained snapshot of a time capturing four weeks of my life."

If sales really are poor, perhaps MusicRadar's "Libertines will reform in 2009" prediction is a no-brainer. There is a recession on, after all…
