While most technology is getting smaller, the size of sample-based piano libraries continues to rise. Colour Sonics´ Pianos V 2.0 is a 43GB collection that features emulations of a range of classic instruments.

Both acoustic and electric piano models are included, and each note is sampled at 20 velocities for 40 seconds. Release and noise layers are also included, and there are 260 patches.

The pianos are based on models by the likes of Yamaha, Steinway, Bösendorfer, Wurlitzer and Rhodes, and users have what Colour Sonics says is “unprecedented control” over the sound characteristics.

In addition to the standard piano sound, you also get 2230 modern presets - these are based on 50 pads that have been specially created for this release.

A bonus package - Colours Of The Rainbow - is also included; this is said to contain ‘extraordinary sounds´, which we assume means non-piano-like tones.

Available in Giga, HALion, Kontakt, Kontakt 2.1, EXS and SF2 formats, CS Pianos V 2.0 is Mac- and PC-compatible. The boxed version costs $499.

The software is being distributed via the Sonart Audio website, where you can also find more information and audio examples.
