Tone King Royalist 45C
Cheap it isn’t, but regal tone rarely comes at a low price. If you are willing to spend whatever it takes to get the ultimate JTM45 and Plexi tones under your fingers, look no further.
And, thankfully, this huge-sounding 1x12 can be tamed; the onboard Ironman attenuator circuit is very good indeed.

Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb
Fender’s latest Deluxe Reverb may hark back to the ‘silverface’ era, but it’s no strict reissue.
Lush reverb and tremolo effects are now available across both of the amp’s channels, plus it’s built to break up a little earlier and be more pedal-friendly than its forebears. More practical but just as inspiring.
Blackstar ID:Core Stereo 20
Cast aside your prejudices about practice amps now - this small digital combo might cost less than your favourite overdrive pedal but has a widescreen, living room-filling sound and stealthily packs a lot of functionality into a simple-to-use box.
Practice makes perfect, and this is a nigh-on perfect combo for most players’ at-home purposes.
MESA Engineering Recto-Verb 25
Though it’s easy to think of Mesa as the brand that defined the sound of American hard rock and metal in the 1990s, thanks to the omnipresence of Dual Rectifier stacks during that period, the company practically invented the concept of the giant-killing combo with the launch of the original Mark I Boogie back in 1972.
The Recto-Verb fuses both strands of the Californian company’s heritage together, and between its two channels, each of which boasts two voicings, you’ll find some very convincing, high-quality tones for everything from splashy surf to modern metal.
In this incarnation, the Recto-Verb 25 combo is the near-perfect versatile gigging amp for pub and club shows - and for a USA-made amp of this quality, it’s priced competitively, too.
