Now your iPhone can control guitars and amps

Amongst the new MacBooks, Snow Leopard and iPhone 3GS revealed yesterday at Apple's WWDC keynote came a significant announcement for musicians.

An onstage demo of the Line 6 and D'Addario MIDI Mobilizer hardware and Planet Waves Rig Remote iPhone app showed how owners of Line 6 Vetta II amplifiers will soon be able to use their iPhones to not only control amp settings but to store and transfer presets.

Owners of Line Variax guitars will also be able to change tunings, body, pickups and numerous other options remotely via the Rig Remote app.

Does this point to a not-too-distant future where live venues are equipped with Line 6 rigs and the guitar players simply show up to the gig with their preset sounds ready to load into the amps from their iPhones?

MIDI Mobilizer and Rig Remote 1.0 are currently in development, with pricing, availability, and more detail on the complete feature set to be announced at a future date.
