A Guinness World Record attempt is literally 'kicking' off in Akron, Ohio today – drummer Link Logen will take the throne for more than three and a half consecutive days in a bid to break the drumming marathon record.

To take the crown, Logen will have to beat 2004's record set by Australian drummer Arulanantham Suresh Joachim, who played for a measly 84 hours. Guinness officials say the drums must be played solidly to music with no solos or improvisations, allowing a 15 minute break every three hours.

If successful, this will be the third time Logen's name has graced the pages of the Guinness book. In 2005 he set the double bass marathon for playing 160 beats per minute on two drum pedals for 14 hours and 38 minutes, before smashing his own record a year later with 432 beats per minute for 10 hours and 30 minutes.

Ohio.com caught up with Link before the attempt: ''I'm always hearing things about who's fastest, how many beats per minute this guy plays and I thought, 'Yeah, that's great for 60 seconds but how long can you last?"

Logen hopes to raise money for Akron Children's Hospital and local youth group BlackHawks.
