The No.1 website for musicians
That's right, joining in the social network revolution we at Guitar Techniques now have our own GT fan page on Facebook. Why not come and join GT's family and friends, check up on what we're up to and see the latest happenings... as they happen!
If a simple three dial stompbox is to be the source for your overdrive utopia, then you've a lot to wade through in the market place. That said, some are better than others and a few really outstanding. After a few sessions and gigs with the Protone Gold Label Premium Overdrive, we'd heartily place this in the outstanding group.
Every now and then GT comes across a new product that is so good, we have to tell everyone about it! This is the case with 'Guitar Practiced Perfectly', a PC software application that will have you focused at getting great results with your playing, fast! Over to its creators:
If you're like us on GT, you'll be constantly looking for 'the sound'. Well, away from the mainstream range, you might like to know about two great overdrive/distortion pedals I've found. They sound very smooth and dynamic and fit sonically in between older Marshalls and the revered (and mega rare and expensive) Dumble amps.
Every now and again we get to try out a distortion pedal that really wows us. The Drivegate DG-1 from Top Tones was one that did this recently with its fat raucous drive tone and long sustain that ballparks Dave Gilmour's lead sound admirably. Infact, Jamie Humphries, Dave Kilminster and Jason Sidwell all have one on their pedal boards now!
For countless guitarists, hybrid picking (using pick and fingers) is the ultimate approach to playing the guitar. The pick is great for strumming and burning lead lines while fingers and pick can soften your sound, add greater 'snap' to strings and (perhaps more importantly) allow for all manner of polyphonic playing that a pick alone cannot provide.
If you're on the hunt for new drive pedals, US pedal maker Wampler has an outstanding series of stompboxes that are sure to please. We've tried out two of them and they do sound good…
For those who marvel at the tones of Santana, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford and Sonny Landreth there is nothing better than the sound of a guitar plugged into a Dumble Super Overdrive amp. Thing is, not only are these US amps pretty much impossible to get, if you were to find one you'd need to remortgage your house to buy it. Yes, they are that expensive!
There are numerous picks on the market and we like many of them (the Jazz III XL's are popular with many GT tutors) but on the advice of Guthrie Govan and Dweezil Zappa recently, we tried out four Red Bear picks and were mightly impressed.
So you've a distortion pedal for extra filth, some delay for ambient echoes and a phaser for some psychedelic whooshing so what next to get? Let's suggest you check out two pedals from Mod Tone…
