  I have been using Boss compressors since 1989, often as the only pedal between a Fender Stratocaster and an amplifier, Fender guitars with single coil pickups need a little compression to add extra oomph to the signal before it hits the amplifier, i have no experience of other compressor pedals than the Boss pedal, it does add a little hiss to the signal if the pedals level is too high but it does the job for me.
