Manufacturer's description

The 513 Rosewood features a newly developed, patent applied for pickup system providing 13 modern and vintage sounds utilizing 5 prorietary single coil pickups. Other specifications include a Brazilian rosewood neck and fretboard, a 25 1/4" scale length, a special neck joint, new 513 bird inlays and a new, easy to use integrated electronics control package, which includes volume control, tone control and two blade switches. One blade switch is a 5-way pickup selector and the other is a 3-way mode switch that allows you to select between the single coil, clear humbucking and heavy humbucking modes. This is one of our most versatile instruments that can go from screaming humbuckers to sparkling single coils with the flick of a 3-way.

I have the brazilian rosewood version- its fantastic! Playability is great, and out of the box it had a nicely worn-in feel. Pick-up voicings are very versatile, and its a great gigging guitar. Set-up from PRS could have been better.

Pros

Typical high quality build; versatility; single-coil tones.

Cons

Not all will like the look of the pickups; fret tops feel too flat.

Verdict

The good news is that you’ll probably see a standard 513 (without our review model’s cost-hiking 10-top and gold hardware) with a street price closer to £2,600. Still considerable but if you genuinely need a ‘Swiss army knife’ of a guitar we strongly recommend you spend some time checking out this model. It’s hugely versatile and the single-coil voices are quite special.
