Marshall 1974X £1202

Manufacturer's description

The 1974X is an authentic re-issue of the fabled model 1974 combo of the late sixties (1966-1968). Just like the original, it boasts a point-to-point, handwired, tagboard circuit housed in an aluminium chassis, plus a valve-driven tremolo circuit. At the very heart of its simple but effective, two channel design can be found six valves: three ECC83s in the preamp, an EZ81 rectifier and a pair of cathode biased EL84's in the power stage. As the output and mains transformers are vital components in any amplifier as they influence performance, sound and feel, we worked extremely closely with our associates at Dagnall in order to duplicate the proginal, "off-the-shell" transformers in all areas.

I have had this amp since Feb 09. Very solid reliability compared to the Vox AC 15 and Fender 65 Princeton Reverb I owned prior to the Marshall. I can not believe the difference in the sound between the This Marshall and the other amps. the fender is toppy and plenty of bottom. Scooped out is the best way to describe it. the Marshall is all middle. Not to much so that it doesn't have the balance right. Dead simple controls. 2 Channels both have a 'tone ' control. 1st channell is a 'darker' sound. You only have to turn the volume to between 2 and 3 and the volume blows you away. For 18 watts is quiet staggering how load this is. Turn the amp to about 6 and you get a sound to die for. Excellent distortion, it does go a bit louder but it breaks up more. Flat out you best take cover. Its loud and it gives you that classic distorted tone think Bluesbreaker Clapton, Free, AC/DC. Its pretty clean really the distortion is not over the top. Channel 2 has a lot more 'headroom'. and a 'tremolo' circuit. At 3 to 4 on the volume this sings. However the volume levels are a problem if you are a home user. This amp is best when its pushed but the volume levels will not win your neighbors over. I use a few pedals through it that alows me to play at reasonable levels without upsetting the folks in the vicinity. I would replace if it was stolen its that good. I think I need an attenuator to get the best or move to Gobi desert. Great amp and blows away the opposition in this price range. I'm really content with this amp. If you have the money get it. The stories about the output transformer are 'old hat'. This amp is solid and reliable more than can be said for the Vox and the Fender. Handwired made in England nuff said.
