The No.1 website for musicians
Though the 50 Watt 1987X shares the same front and rear panel features as its big brother, the 1959SLP, it does have its own distinct personality. Sweet, warm, singing sounds are the trademark of this great tone machine. As is the case with the 1959SLP, the 1987X has fittings and hardware as true to the originals as possible, to ensure an authentic Marshall ‘vintage’ look, plus the addition of a Series Effects Loop with Bypass and Level switches.

An awesome sounding amp. Great looks (I have the ltd edition white one without the FX loop) and build quality. I bought mine used about 18 months ago and no problems so far (still on the original tubes) and I play it loud. I use various fuzz/od pedals through mine but still enjoy cranking it up on its own now and again for some great ACDC/Free type sounds.
It works well for a wider range of sounds than you might think. As well as the expected classic rock stuff you can get some great metal sounds by sticking a nice loud pedal in front of it (I use it for this, and so does Brent Hinds from Mastodon). Just don't expect any Dual Rectifier/Mode 4 type extreme scooped sort of stuff. Can't say how it works for single coil pickups but it just begs to have a nice Les Paul or SG plugged in because the mid range is richer than expensive xmas pudding!
One little trick this has up it's sleeve is that you don't need a patch lead to bridge the normal and high treble channels. You just plug into the low input of the normal channel and you can mix the pair.
Don't expect great flexibilty from it or quality sounds at friendly volumes though.
