Brian Eno releases ambient software for iPhone

Bloom now available at the App Store

Brian Eno is truly the godfather of ambient, generative music – if it's possible to be such a thing – and now he's moved things forward once again by releasing the Bloom software for Apple's iPhone/iPod touch platform.

Described as "Part instrument, part composition and part artwork," the new app (which was created with software designer Peter Chilvers) lets you create patterns and melodies by tapping the screen. If this sounds too much like hard work, you can simply leave Bloom to work on its own.

Bloom isn't the most in-depth software on the iPhone, but it does give you a few parameters to control. What's more, it's cheap - just $3.99/£2.39 – so even if you only fire it up occasionally, you don't have to feel guilty about buying it.

You can buy Bloom now from Apple's App Store (iTunes required).
