Default Anti-saturation?

Did a gig last Friday with the Laney GH100L and a Monte Allums modded DS-1 - problem was there wasn't quite enough 'rounded' gain for the rhythm parts, although it was great for leads. All knobs at 12 o'clock.

I love the extra dynamics you get with lower gain and hate that overly saturated squelch most modern metal amps give you - is there a trick I'm missing to get that last few drops of 'clear' gain out of my setup without it saturating and taking the edge off everything?

Tried different leads, and have two guitars - one with some PAFs and one with SD Distortions. The PAF does it better, I might even go down to a Strat with single coils.

Pre amp gain down and power amp master volume up. Nice and fat with a hint of (different) overdrive. Get the output transformer sweating and its a different quality sound.

Everything at 12 O'clock - you are allowed to tweak

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that! I'll give it a go.

One drawback of a 100w valve amp is that to find the best sounds one has to really cook the thing, and at the moment I can only do that at gigs.
