The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Pendulum?
I'm a bedroom guitarist with a poo PC so was thinking of getting a drum machine to help me out. What would be the best/easiest that would let me create some fat drum sounds? I want to be able to set my own intros, fills, verse and chorus etc patterns. I've seen ones by Zoom, Boss, Alesis etc etc and its a bit overwhelming. Do you have any recommendations?

A drum machine will be fine for 1 shot samples but all those artists combine these with loops taken from real drums and spliced / chopped up etc. You might be better off looking a samplers, the akai ones have a good reputation or just get a software one which is going to be a lot cheaper and more versatile and should run nicely even on ancient PCs.
Reme, ber back in the 90s some of these guys were producing their best stuff.

If you just want to play along to beats in the idioms of the groups mentioned, then you could go down the Acid Route. Acid Music Studio http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/musicstudio will let you play back pre-recorded drum loops that can be time stretched to match any BPM you want. Most DAWS can also play back ACIDised loops. There are thousands of drum loops available and the web seems full off 'free' (probably pirated) loops for download. You can also get ACID loops of instruments - keys, bass lines etc to create your own backing tracks. There's a trial version available for download from the Sony website.
The system requirements given are: # Microsoft® Windows® XP or Windows Vista™ # 800 MHz processor (1 GHz if using video) # 200 MB hard-disk space for program installation # 256 MB RAM # Windows-compatible sound card # DVD-ROM drive (for installation) # Supported CD-Recordable drive (for CD burning) # Microsoft DirectX® 9.0c or later (included on application disc

Or if you want to keep it really simple, there's a free ACID express player on that website as well.

a laptop or even a netbook with reason/ableton live/fl studio or whatever might be your best bet, you can use one-shots with loops very easily.

Going back to the drum machines, Liam Howlett (aka the Prodigy) mentioned once in an interview that he is a bit fan of the Korg Electribe series, the drum one is 'Korg Er mk2' I own one myself and it's great
