Default Urban Slang: "Bushwacker"

'Scuse my ignorance but....

If a kid in their mid teens called a woman in their mid thirties a "Bushwacker", what does it mean?

I have a feeling it could also refer to a lady who likes other ladies...

To 'Gaybash' traditionally means to be homophobic.

Indeed, but she is not using it in that context (I am in no sense homophobic either) she is using it as a generic pejorative term when she feels something I have said or done is stupid, foolish, embarassing or all of the above...

Kids tend to pick these words up at school and have no notion of their supposed meaning. My 12 year old Son called me a twat one evening and after I picked myself up off the floor and explained what it actually meant, he was extremely mortified. He just thought it meant 'stupid person'.

Ah but that is the beauty of the shifting language- These days I think that 'twat' does mean 'clumsy, stupid or self-serving person' and not it's original meaning. That's not to say that no-one would understand if you said 'she kicked me in the twat'...

Meanings shift.

However I don't think that is all of the picture in this case- When I was at school 'gay bashing' was a term meaning to go out, find someone gay and inflict violence upon them. As far as I remember, although it was used sometime in the form 'gay basher' to mean someone that goes 'gay bashing', it was never concatenated and reduced to 'gaybash'..' I think that is a modern word that has grown up from the perjorativ use of the word 'gay' to indicate that something is weak, or un-masculine without neccessarily meaning homosexual other than in the lingering shades of the last use of the word 'gay'.
