Default Loyalty Cards

What do you think of them? Nectar Cards and such.
Something for nothing seems good. Now, I'm no tin hat wearing conspiracy-geek but I think I'd prefer sainsburys didn't know exactly what I was buying, where and when etc. etc. Maybe it is silly, but I'm not sure where I stand on it.

For years I used Nectar. Always filled up at BP so got points then too.

When I bought my PS3 at Argos I had enough points to pay for £275 of it.

Nectar - great for Argos use etc

Tesco - great for sending off and getting vouchers for theme parks etc.

Our local private schools have come up with a decent idea - they have similar cards, where you pay monthly or yearly for a level of membership which varies according to how much you pay. Your card entitles you to a certain discount at local shops who've signed up, but the money you pay actually goes into a pot to fund means-tested scholarships to the schools for local kids.

However, back to the original topic...I don't trust anybody when they promise not to misuse my data, so I tend not to pay for stuff by card and usually avoid mass-market analysis tools like Tesco's Clubcard. It's not necessarily the thought that they'll use it for some malign purpose; it's the fact that I know that no system is secure so the smaller surface area you present, the less likely you are to get stung in terms of ID theft etc.

Exactly the same as Fret.

We shop at Sains and get petrol there too so every month we get hudreds of pounds worth of nectar points which are redeemable loads of places and count as cash in most cases.

Tesco is amazing though because they quadruple the amount if you use them online. In my old house we used to shop at Tesco and get fuel there so we always got £30-£50 in vouchers dropping through the letterbox every few months. Bung them online and we had £200 to spend for doing nothing! We were doing our shopping there anyway!

how does it work then? Do you get say 1 point for every £20 you spend, and 1 point = £1 when you cash it in?

Aye something like that. They're all different ratio's, etc. I think Nectar is £1 = 1 point and from memory, 500 Nectar points is a fiver or something like that. Yeh it works out expensive to buy stuff with points, but if you're going there (the shop) anyway you might aswell benefit.

I regularly go down south with the work and everytime I do it I get all the fuel and hotel on Nectar points which is ace.

...or you could join the Co-Op, and get yer divvy on whatever you spend. They occasionally send me a £10 voucher to use in-store.

If confidentiality is an issue, always use cash, and wear a balaclava in the shop:

That, or send someone else in for your copy of Spanker's Weekly...

Boots card is good, they're generous on points which helps when getting stuff for the nipper. Other than that, it's all about coffee shop stamp cards

+1 on the Boots points. They're known for being one of the better and more generous points programmes. I've had a couple of pairs of decent sunglasses out of it and perfume-y type stuff

I love my boots card, unfortunately im rubbish at saving, they normally get used when i have no money at the end of the month, so i get meal deals and use points. Not doing too bad at the moment, nearly £11 on it and you get loads of vouchers in the post and such. I love doublepoints
