Default "Neutral" Amps

I really like the sounds from Roland Cube amps but find that they're not powerful or switchable enough for my needs.

So, I'm thinking that a Boss GT10 through a neutral/power amp into a 4x12 might be an option. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for? Or any other options that anyone can think of?

Crate powerblock and Marshal 1960

See this thread. ^^

Almost anything solid state is going to be neutral so long as you don't push it in any way. Don't forget, if you are using 16R cabs you need double the 8R power (at which most ss amps are specc'ed).

You are in fact pretty safe to go for seriously silly claimed power levels 150-200W into 8R into a 60W 16R speaker is not OTT.

Dave.

Smartsound do a nice 1u amp that would be perfect.

you are really looking for PA amps rather than guitar ones. PA amps are usually flat response.

Indeed.

I use an Art SLA-1 with my Axe-FX into my VHT 2x12 cab.

the amp is rated at 100W per side OR 260W bridged (which is what I run) into 8 Ohm.

My cab is rated at 60 Watts 8 Ohms

I have no problem running the full 260W into the cab. I dont because if fricking loud !!!

The Crate Powerblock is a good suggestion and the GT-10 should work great with that...though if theres a PA at your gig and sufficient monitoring then why not just get the GT-10 and go straight into that? Why bother with an amp at all? ...you could even buy yourself your own powered wedge monitor to throw your sound at you whilst the PA throws it out to the audience.

If you must have an amp then the JC120 is the loud clean beast you wanna check out.

Yamaha and Tech 21 both do (did?) powered guitar cabs that would be ideal for what you're looking at doing:

The DS60-112

And the Power Engine:

How easy it'd be to lay hands on either one of them I don't know.

Cheers all.

I've seen the Tech 21 amps before but at just sixty solid state watts, I'm not convinced they're loud enough for my needs.
We run a regular jam night and I'm up against a very loud drummer and another guitarist with a JMP50.
We don't have much of a PA and My old Marshall AVT150 combo struggled in the volume stakes (The AVT 150 is only 75w when used without and extension cab).

If only Roland would make a Cube head with a proper footswitch........

.
I gigged with one for months before getting the JVM -- the Tech21 was fine and I was in a 5 piece with a f*cking loud and mic'd drummer!

I've actually got one knocking about spare which I want to get around to selling. You're welcome to try it if you want Rob.

If youre going that route then you'll be looking for a distortion pedal. Much as I love my GT10 the distortions just plain arent as good as an analogue pedal or an amp preamp.

I agree but if he's happy with the COSM sounds in the Cubes then he should be with the same albeit updated sounds on the GT-10.
