Default Resumes and CVs...

I've got to update my resume/CV as I'm going to start looking for a new job.
It's taken me weeks just to get round to finding the flash drive with it on. Just looking at it chills me to the bone. I hate writing these things. Any tips?

Tell the truth. Less to remember at the interview that way.

Less is more. Save the detail for interview.

Two pages max. You might, howver, have more than one CV. I used to have at least four (one-page and two-page, with and without salary details).

Logical sequence as well, nobody wants to spend time trying to work out what you've been doing. The average recruiter doesn't have a huge amount of time to read CVs.

Plain simple font; you will lose more for illegibility than you will for design, unless the job is design-related. Never send a photocopy, always send a freshly-printed CV.

A CV has two purposes. The first, and most important, is to get an interview. The second is to tell people what you can do. Not what you've done, that is unlikely to be of huge interest. There is a huge difference between the two. If you can pick out accomplishments from your pasdt jobs, so much the better.

Always tie in the job spec to your CV in the covering letter, don't leave it to a recruiter to find out why you would be a good match for their vacancy.

As someone who has interviewed and recruited hundreds of people in my time I have one tip. Tailor your CV to job interview - do some research and try to find out what an employer is looking for and then tweak your CV. You're more likely to get past first base.

We randomly throw away 50% of all CVs we receive.

That automatically gets rid of the unlucky people.

What if the person chucking away the CVs is the unlucky one?

He already got through - otherwise he wouldn't be in the position to make the decision!
