My interest in fishing has been rejuvinated of late and I'm keen to buy some gear and start to fish again.
I haven't fished for 20 years and was only a "part timer" back then - obviously don't want to spend a lot of money - are the full sets in Argos any good? I'm guessing probably not so what should I be looking for? I'd also be after a junior set up for my 9 year old who has also expressed an interest. We're going to a holiday park this year that has it's own fishing lakes (Warmwell in Dorset) and both keen to have a go. All advice greatfully recieved!

Dunno about the coarse fishing but pop down the road to Weymouth and go crabbing off the harbour wall. And visit Portland. And have beer at the Springhead at Sutton Poyntz and the Smugglers at Osmington Mills. And nip up to Corfe and take yourselves on a steam train to Swanage.
That doesn't really help, does it?

Certainly if you are planning a trip to Warmwell, I'd be looking at a decent sized landing net and a rod/reel combination capable of landing some big ol' kippers - I had a look round there last month and there are some enormous Carp in the main lake! There is an on-site tackle shop there, and I think I recall that they hire gear out, so that may be worth investigating aswell.

I'd avoid Argos and instead look at one of the many specialised online tackle shops to see what deals they have for name brand kit.

As a family, we started off with three cheap telescopic 'carp rods' and a tackle set from Lidl. They lasted for a couple of summers, trout fishing at the reservoir, fishing for small carp at the local pond and even spinning for pollock, off the rocks, on Islay, before biting the dust, but it was enough to be paying to see whether we liked the sport or not. Gradually, we replaced them with more expensive kit.
As has been said, your local tackle shop will give you loads of advice. Last edited by honeytone : 07-20-2009 at 11:01 AM. |
