Default Off to do research in Poland

Got a letter through from my university today, I've been offered this MRes course if I get a 2.2 (in line for a first, so I really should):

http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/aa/post...htraining.html

A few more months here at Keele to get some groundwork and preparation. Then early next year I'll be off to the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology in Warsaw for 7 months. I've got funding from the university to pay most of my course fees and from the EU so I can survive in Poland. I'll be doing research into learning and memory in the brain

Now to learn me some Polish (the institute is english-speaking though, which will be a big help).

Warsaw is brilliant in places, especially the old town (which is new really but looks old). I lived there for about 18 months once. Cafe Novy Swiat is worth a visit if it's still open. Careful about what you say and where though. It is VERY dangerous to argue back over there. I'm not one for scaremongering but I saw more guns there than anywhere else i've been and several of them were being used at the time.

Great night life though. Enjoy.

Thanks for the tips. I'll probably be trying to keep a low profile as much as possible until I get a feel for the place. One of my current lecturers (and tbh the guy who's probably most responsible for me getting this) is Polish and did his PhD at the Nencki. He's promised me that he'll show me around and introduce me to the jazz scene etc. He's not a musician himself but he's very into music, he watches me play sometimes at the folk club in the postgraduate bar here at Keele.

You'll have a great time. The nightlife really is excellent, at least it was 15 years ago. Saying that there was a lot of russians at the time I was there too, it's where most of the guns were coming from at the time. I could have put you in touch with a very cool and knowledgable radio DJ there called Thomas Beczinski, but sadly he's dead Ho hum.

Have fun.
