Anyone bought them?
My Jackson RR3 has a set of "Duncan Designed" pups (based on SD Invaders at a guess)which although are very high output they are extremely lacking in the "bite" department and seem muddy and a bit dull. I was thinking of replacing the bridge pup for now and the Iron Gear Steam Hammer looks like great value. Opinions? Other suggestions?

I've got a pair of Steamhammers on my Richwood Tree Of Life limited edition LP clone and they are fantastic v.f.m. Great sound without getting muddy, highly recommended.

I ordered a "Hot Slag" yesterday!
I'm expecting it today, if the Royal Mail pull their finger out. I'm going to put it in my Epi Flying Vee, purely out of curiosity; I thought that, at less than 30 squids, it was cheap enough for an experiment. |

Well, I've fitted the Hot Slag to my V, and...
I wasn't blown away by it, a slight improvement on the Epi pickup; a bit crisper, perhaps, but not louder. I tested them both and found that the Hot Slag is 16k ohms and surprisingly, the Epi is 14.4k ohms. I always thought the Epi pickups were good anyway, but seeing as a lot of people slag 'em off, I thought perhaps I was wrong. The real test will be at full rehearsal volume, see if I get any unwanted feedback etc. So, either Epi pickups are better than people think, or Iron Gear pickups are not that great (though at £26.95 I still think they're a bargain) |
