Default Intentionally damaging speaker?

So the early rock pioneers punched holes and did unspeakable things to their amp speakers to create distortion and what not... has anyone ever actually done this?

I've got a crappy old amp which just won't break up the way it should, and it's been superceded by my new 15w Peavey Vypyr, so I'm half tempted to go at it with scissors to see what will happen

Anyone been brave/stupid enough to do this?

Instead of attacking it with scissors, just give it to a kid who's starting out or something.

Whats the point of wasting it?

Aye Gaz, good point well made.
I do use it for jam sessions at work, so it does still serve a purpose. I just wondered if anyone had actually done it and ended up with amazing results or anything

Is it in fact the speaker that is the prime suspect in poor o/d sound?

Can you hook the Peavey speaker to it and see how that sounds?

If you are not too fussed about the amp you could try soldering a load resistor across the speaker about equal to its own impedance. That will give the valves more work to do (and bugger them sooner!).

If you let me know the make and model and if I can find a map for it there might be some caps you can snip out that might help.

Dave.

I stuck a knitting needle through the speaker of a shit tranny amp I once had, because I'd heard about what the Kinks had done. I put 6 holes around the edge.
It was farty and raspy and I thought it was cool, at first, until it dawned on me that it was now only sound it would do.
I have a feeling I've still got the damn thing in my loft...

Cheezes,
You can fix that with layers of newspaper and PVA glue. If the holes are right on the edge suspension use Copydex,
Dave.

Cheers Dave, I may do that one day.
I'm not overly concerned, as it was 20+ years ago and I've had many amps since.
It was a weird little thing, the speaker was oval.
I'm gonna have a look for it tomorrow.
