Default Home networking quick question

I've got my PC and Xbox hooked up to the wireless router virginmedia gave me. The IP addresses for each keep changing, 192.168.1.x where x is 2, 3 or 4. I guess this is because I switch the router off at the mains every night and it resets (?).

How can I stop this happening? I don't know where to begin. Is it a router setting? Can I bind a local IP to a MAC or summat? It's a pain to set up explorer to ftp to/from a particular machine just to have the IP change the next day.

Thanks peeps

Instead of having the PC and Xbox set to get an IP address automatically, set them each a permanent address, one as 192.168.1.2, the other as 192.168.1.3, set the default gateway as 192.168.2.1 and it's been a while since I did this so I can't remember the subnet mask off the top of my head but someone else should be able to tell you

EDIT: Oh yeah - 255.255.255.0

Aha! So that's what static IP means!

Cheers suit

Argh! If the xbox isn't set to Automatic(DHCP) it can't/won't access the net.

I hate network stuff

You might need to setup IP Address, Subnet, AND default Gateway, as well as typing in the static DNS addresses <- these are what translates http://wwwblahblahblah into IP addresses.

on a PC command window type in IPCONFIG /ALL and it will list the right values. (If on UNIX/Macos type in IFCONFIG)

Cheers jal - I'm gonna get on it this afternoon.

The xbox is a bit finicky about its settings iirc but I've been meaning to sort it all out for some time. There's a way to access my iTunes library I've never gotten my head around.

I'm really bad at this stuff

Anyone thinks this is tricky should try configuring SNA, X.25 or X.400 stacks !
