Default difference between 3/4 and 6/8? 2/2 and 4/4?

according to my maths they are the same thing...
why do you see pieces of music written in 3/4 with a 6/8 bar in the middle? or songs in 2/2...why not call it 4/4? what's the difference?

thank you
marco

Big discussion on these issues on this thread:

http://www.musicradar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33248

6/8 has more of a 'two beats in the bar' feel: ONE-two-three FOUR-five-six, tends to be quicker, lilting feel
3/4, slower, more waltz like feel, ONE-and-two-and-three-and ONE-and-two-and-three-and.

Golden Brown is in 6/8 with a few bars of 7/8 thrown in. Also Back to the old House by the Smiths. And many more.
