Default What's a Marshall Mercury?

Someone's offered me a Marshall Mercury, and I'm struggling to find out what the hell one is.

He tells me it's a 20 watt EL34 combo (that sounds wrong for starters) in red, with basketweave grill cloth and a Greenback speaker. Made in 1969.

From googling, it seems it might be a combo version of a 2060, but I don't know. I don't think I want it to be honest, but I suspect it might be worth more than he's asking (he offered me a swap for my JCM800).

As far as I know, it was a small-ish amp Marshall built in the late 60's early 70's on a mail order basis only. I think it's EL84's he means not 34's.

I'll have a look in a couple of books I have for you and let you know,

Cheers
Hugh

Right here goes:

It's either orange or red in terms of vinyl covering (!), transistor preamp and 1 EL84 output valve pushing out 5 watts into a 12" speaker (no speaker maker info sorry but prob a Celestion). Mail order only from early '72 to late '73, model number 2060 Mercury.

Cheers
Hugh

Sounds interesting. 2060 sounds familiar, think I've seen these on eBay before and in Music Ground when it was in Leeds.

Edit - amp names taken from Fords, or is that just a coincidence? Mercury, Capri, Popular etc.

Weren't they budget Bluesbreakers? I was under the impression they were cheaply-made catalogue-only amps designed for people who couldn't afford the real thing...

Had it been a Capri I'd have bitten the guy's hand off to get my hand on it.

I had one... and was not very impressed, tbh. I sold it within a few weeks of ownership.
