Default Want a new guitar

Hi Guys

I'm looking to buy a new acoustic guitar. At the moment I have an ibanez, not bad but bit too heavy on the bass end and not a fan of the pickup sound. So looking for a new one. I would like something in the range of £100 - £300. Don't mind whether electro or just acoustic (sound engineer, prefer mic anyway). I would like something a bit more unique looking and I love the natural wood colours.

Any body help would be very grateful.

cheers

dan

I'd spend the money on something with a solid top - for which you'll be looking at nearer the top of your budget. My Tangle was a little more than that and is all solid.

The Vintage guitars are nearer the lower end of your budget, but I've never heard a complaint about them, though I haven't tried one myself.

What body shape are you after? Do you need a cutaway? Also, have you tried different strings on your existing guitar, as they do make a difference.

If you want a good sounding and well-built guitar choose something from the FG series from Yamaha. The FG730S has laminated rosewood back and sides, a solid spruce top and sounds and plays great. They are also well within your budget.

I have tried different string but still to bass heavy and as i said I don't like the pick up sound.

To be honest I'm not sure what kind of body I'm looking for. I'm not sure what the difference really. I'm assuming it something to do with the sound but not sure what way it works.

Faith Parlour?

Bit over your budget though, but Merchant City have them on discount for 349

I found myself particularly drawn to the Mercury parlour. With a recommended retail price of £329, including the hard case, it’s fantastic value and has displaced the Larrivee as my previous favourite parlour model. It’s easily the best budget parlour model I’ve played and would make a great travel guitar too. I don’t know how much of it is down to Patrick Eggle, but I’d say that Faith really do have something to offer with these guitars. The dreadnought is good; the parlour is a revelation, simply wonderful – everyone should have one!

Bigger body shapes often accentuate the bass. You might like to try something like an OM, 000, parlour or auditorium size, rather than a dread or a jumbo.

You can't go wrong with a Yamaha and you should be able to pick up a very good used one for your budget. I would recommend the L series. I've got an LA18 and it is a fantastic guitar in all respects.

I know everybody raves about the Yamahas, I tried about 5 or 6 when I was looking for an acoustic and had almost settled on one when I thought I might as well try the other offerings in the shop. I left with a Freshman, I can't remember the model (but it was a limited edition so probably not even around anymore), A/B ing just made the Yamahas sound kinda generic - if that even makes sense!
You should definately at least try a couple out, mine's got a solid top and was about £300 I think.
