You mean "dang-a-dang-dang, dang dang-a-dang-a, dang-a dang dang, dang dang-a dang-a" ?
C'mon, it's easier than all that 1e+a 2e+a stuff ! ![]()

During the late 80s I was in a band which wanted to do PW in a medley with some other stuff. I couldn't do the intro, neither could the other guitarist. The lead singer wasn't much of a guitarist, but that intro was one thing he could do properly. So the other guitarist held down the chord, and the singer crept up behind him and reached round with a plectrum to strum the intro. It actually worked!

You need to slow it down and listen to it and you will pick it up hopefully?

If memory serves me correctly (not always a given) it is played with a strict down / up /down / up... for the first three beats of the bar, then two down strokes on the forth beat.
Everything is in 16ths except the last two down strokes which are 8ths. However, what makes the riff distinctive is the accents you play on the strum pattern, starting with the first down accented, next is an up, then down again, then up, accent the final two down strums. Hope that makes sense - it does in my head! |

OK...
Say you've got four beats in a bar, and you strum one down stroke on each beat, counting "1 2 3 4", so you're strumming quarter-notes. Now, to play eighth notes in the same bar, split each beat into two, playing "one and two and three and four and", where you strum down on the "one two three four", and up on all the "and"s, counting "1+2+3+4+". Note, strumming is strictly alternate up & down, no missing out strokes ! OK ? Now for the tricky bit : To play sixteenth notes, we have to split each note into four, so we can count a single beat as "one e and a", where "e" and "a" are just noises to help us keep in time. We also strum "down up down up" as we count "1e+a". So, to play the whole bar, we count "1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a" doing strictly alternate up and down strums as per "1e+a" above... This takes the same length of time as playing "1234" at the start... (Oops, gotta go, work calls...)
