Having fun with midi controllers

ok I know you can hook up a wii controller I have done it (its good fun) but now got my hands on an xbox 30 wireless controller anyone know how to hook that up (on a mac)?

Also the other thing is I would like to program my wii controller so that when I push one of the buttons it moves onto the next channel or FX is this possible? I'm using ableton live.

Am I crazy or is both of these possible?
