the fact they go for less than half as much in the USA? that stops me buying them on principle

the old two channel ones are *meant* to sound better, but that's 100% hearsay on my part as i've only tried the newer ones.

if you like it, go for it, i guess. if you want the mesa tone, you should probably go with a mesa.

however, if you just want a kickass high gain tone, you have a ton of options- brunetti, diezel, soldano, vht, engl, bogner, koch, splawn, CAA, etc. etc. etc.

main thing is, though, it's up to you. if you know you won't be happy if it doesn't say mesa on it, go with the mesa. Just try as many of its competitors out (if you haven't already), to make sure you still prefer the mesa.

Im not a name gotta have person by any means. I love the sound of these things, three channels that will cover every style of music I play, seems to be the ideal amp for me.

I agree with the price over here though, but Marshalls do the same once they get to the US - I guess its the addition of all the government added taxes that sticks the price up...

the amount of taxes being added doesn't come close to the mark-up on mesas...

if it does what you want, by all means go for it. just try some of its competitors to make sure the mesa is the best option.

of course, if you're getting a really killer deal (i.e. that you could sell on for profit) it might make sense to go for it. but with the credit crunch, prices could fall, so it's debatable how sensible that strategy would be.

If money was no option I'd feel safe with a mesa ,there's plenty of high profile productions incorporating that mesa sound to encourage me to join that club but I'm pretty sure I'd feel safe with an old Marshall as well .
JCM 800 with a pre-amp booster pedal can easily give you enough dirt for rock to death metal and still sound good enough to wave the flag for the U.K and for the privilege of being British you get it for half the price of the yanks.
Dont forget we designed them to run on superior AC voltage

For the money, I'd go for a Soldano Decatone....

Now I've always thought this too, so many artists that I like use Mesa's of various descriptions. But every time I've tried Mesa's I've never managed to get anything like the sounds I've heard out of them, I just can't get on with them.

I had a 2 channel one for a few years. Was very nice indeed.

Never had any issues with it at all.
