Default my first band song post!

Hi All

As you may know, I recently started playing in my first band. We've been together as a 5 piece (2 guitarists, bassist, singist, drummer) for about 5 weeks, I think. Last week we decided to record the rehearsal so we could see where we were and where we needed to go. So here is Basket Case, as played by Blinkwatch (the band's name):

The guitar at the start is definitely me (as I'm the only one playing)!

This was recorded with a Boss Micro BR with an tiny external mic (the other guitarist's kit).

Any feedback, would be much appreciated.

Would prefer the intro guitar to be more crunchy, and possibly have a second guitarist coming in with the drums - just to completely BOOOF it. Drummer needs to work on the drum fills, but im guessing there pretty hard.

Pretty good for 5 weeks work though and it being your first band

Thanks, Fraz. A 2nd guitarist does come it at the drums (least I think that's where he comes in)! Duly noted on the intro guitar tone...the reason I've dialled my crunch down a bit is that the 2nd guitarist plays with too much distortion, IMO, and I was concerned it might all sound just a bit messy when we're both playing. I'll get some more distortion on that intro at the next practice!

Cheers for the comments though, Fraz, 3 of the band haven't been in a band before, so we're flailing around in the dark a bit! Mind you, the bassist is extremely experienced, so he's guiding us, and encouraging us. So any comments are useful to us.

the second vocalist person is fairly out of tune
as per fraz's commments fills could do some work and just general tightening up when the intruments come in and out and whatnot

Yeah - them drum fills need to be tightened up, I won't beat around the bush, a lot!

If you're the only guitar, then you're actually sounding the most confident and and musicianly of the lot!

Bass sounded too loose and sloppy, too, IMO - even for a punk song - needs more aggressive attutude!

Bad music for bad people.

Seemed pretty good to me... if my band were as well organised as that I'd be pretty damn happy.

Thanks for the listens and advice, guys.

There are 2 guitarists, but I'm playing the intro bit on my own (cos I'm better at it - who'd have thought I'd ever say that!).

The drummer has been with us the least amount of time and is aware that Basket Case is one of his weaker songs at the moment - I'm sure they'll tighten up over time. As for the bass, I'm surprised at that as he's the most experienced of us all, maybe he's trying not to show us up! He also does the backing vocals and sings 'because he enjoys it' and not because he's that fussed how it sounds. I'm doing some BVs on some songs, the ones where I can vaguely play and sing at the same time!

I reckon Basket Case is one of the songs that I thought sounded worse than it does (particularly my timing on the intro!), we have got songs we're perhaps better at, but mostly they involve less distortion, so I don't like them as much

Thanks again, this is all good stuff to help us move forward.

Exactly!

I was worried about the guitar cutting through for Basket Case, but it seems I need more distortion and more volume - yay
