Crossroads with Ralph 'karate kid' Macchio. Famous for the Steve Vai extravaganza near the end (which I believe he didn't play because of contractual issues)

'Sweet and Lowdown' is F*****g excellant!!...it's a great Film..loads of Guitar Music (well..it is about a Jazz Guitarist)...there is a basic story line going through it but the Guitar is the main theme!..but hey, don't listen to me..read what a real critic has to say : (pasted below)

In the 1930's, Emmet Ray ruled as the second greatest jazz guitarist in the world. But offstage, and particularly in regards to his relationships with women, he was the undisputed king. Academy Award - nominee Sean Penn stars in this richly textured comedic portrait.

Emmett's reputation as a renowned musician is eclipsed by his eccentric career moves, hilarious clashes with gangsters and stormy love affairs with two very different women: Hattie (a breakout performance by Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Samantha Morton), a mute laundress who loves Emit unconditionally, and Blanche (Uma Thurman), an eccentric heiress, he impulsively marries.

Sweet And Lowdown has been acclaimed as " a loving and comic tribute a musical era! A standout performance by Sean Penn! Samantha Morton's Hattie is a very sweet virtuoso performance!"

He did... or at least he played the bit from Paganini's 5th caprice and the flashy bit that followed. Oh, and the bits in the duel, too. And if IIRC, was it Ry Cooder with the slide parts? And William Kanengiser on the classical bits?

Any of the leathal weapon films are superb 'where to use cheesy pentatonic licks in a really cool way' education.

Agree on the Cooder/Kanengiser bits but I am sure that I read an article from Vai himeslf which mentioned that although he played the parts that came out on the soundtrack CD, he didn't actually play the all the parts from the film soundtrack.

Of course, I could be wrong or just misread it. Old age doesn't come alone.
