Question does the guitar make the player????

i have two guitars, neither very expensive but i enjoy playin 'em. all my mates wit axes reckon i can't sound good cos my gear didn' cost thousands like theirs (alright if you can afford to buy 59 gibson les pauls or fender custom shops)

any pearls of wisdom that i can use to shove up their rich asses an shut 'em up for good?

That doesn't matter...

Do you enjoy playing the guitars that you have? Do you enjoy playing music?

What ever way you look at it, a guitar is really just a tool for making music.

If you can play it well then it will sound good. End of.

That said, a decent amp is more important than your guitar when it comes to your sound. A super expensive guitar will always sound shit through a shit amp, but a shit guitar will sound pretty awesome through a great amp.

One of my best guitars was bought for £12. a beat up classical. I prefer it to the £300 'rodriguez' one I had previously. Sounds just as good to my ears. i bought it to sell but bonded with it and decided to keep it.

If your mates reckon they are only able to sound good through their £££s worth of gear, and not through cheaper equipment like your own, then if you ask me they are probably terrible players. A good guitarist should be able to make great music through any setup....

Big + 1 on that. I have some expensive (over£2k) guitars that sound crap through cheap amps , but I also have a few cheap (under £100) guitars that sound very acceptable through one of my decent tube amps...

Look back to our man Jimi , some of his strats were actually pretty shitty. On old footage you can see him struggling to keep in tune, but don't think he had a shitty sound did he !! I might get shot for this but as a player from the 70's I would say a lot of the copies today are better than the some of the crap the big two were turning out. Back in 1975 I played an Antoria LP , and I wish now I had kept it.

One thing I have noticed is truely brilliant players can make any equipment sound excellent.
Ignore your mates...

Never tell this to the significant other in your life that might veto future GAS purchases but a good player can get a great sound out of crap gear. I have the equation round the wrong way and can manage to get a crap sound out of great gear
