Default Automation for audio tracks

Finally got around to installing CMusic, and I'm loving the simple interface. One thing I can't figure out, though, is how to control volume and panning for audio tracks. I've seen the tutorial in CM100 to automate vst tracks, but I can't see how to use any type of controller on audio. Any ideas?

While I'm at it, what is the little bar underneath the metronome marker, sometimes it's empty, sometimes it has a few vertical bars in it?

Thanks!

Select the Mixer Channel as the player for a new sequence part, then draw in the automation for Parameter->Gain.

The CPU meter. It indicates how hard your computers' CPU is working.

Cool, I think I've got it now. I was trying to use "controllers" instead of "parameters".
