Well it depends. You say tone, playability, history and image. Each of them has a different answer IMHO.

Tone - Les Paul
Playability - Tele
History - Old Gibson acoustic (ala Robert Johnson)
Image - Something from Seasick Steve's arsenal!

ES 335 or Korina flaying V would have the tone and history bit covered. It really depends on what kind of blues you want to play. My NSG26 is my current weapon of choice for dirty blues as it gives

1) rolled back neck bucker woman tone
2) Neck and Bridge Single Coils
3) Easy to play neck.

But for clean work, the H 575 (an ES 175 alike) on the neck pickup is georgeous.

That said if I'm in the right mood I get a better blues performance on my Ibby 7 string than I do on a vintage Gibson ES 335 when I'm not inspired.

Blues is all about feel and inspiration. You will never be that every night.

Yeah, I agree K but you could add the Strat as played by Rory Gallagher & SRV to your History and Image sections.

Tone - Neck Humbucker/P90 - any guitar
Playability - any short scale guitar - mustang?
History - Strat/Old archtop
Image - battered & rusty

*EDIT* actually, who cares about playability - if theres no fight theres no feeling!!!

The answer is of course anything. The best guitar has always been the one you can get your hands on. Seasick steve plays some horribly shitty pawnshop guitar, hound dog taylor played a jap guitar. Gallagher, buddy guy, etc have played more expensive guitars. The list goes on.

You're very vauge, what kind of blues we looking at - electric, acoustic, delta, chicago, british?

Blues ain't about what you play, it's how you play it.

For cyber-punk-blues? Fucking weirdo.

Had you said glitter-marxism-post war-blues then sure, by all means, use a dan armstrong plexi.

Telecaster. Or, even better, Esquire.

Or a resonator. Or a Gibson dual-HB of some sort. Or an archtop. Or a Strat. Or a Dano.

You know what, just play the fucking thing.
