Default Who feels brainy? Pt II

Read this on a matchbox this morning and I've only just got it.

A man walks into a shop.
"How much is one?" he asks.
"£1.20" replies the assistant.
"How much for ten then?" he asks.
"£2.40" replies the assistant.
"OK", said the man, "I'll take 310 please".
"That will be £3.60" said the assistant.

What on earth was the man buying?

Things which are number shaped, although it's impossible to be more specific.

Maybe I should claim that I've heard it before, so it wasn't strictly fair. Sorry.

Or Roman numerals. I= £1.20, X=£2.40, CCCX=£3.60

The X uses more materials than the I so it costs more. The CCCX is on special offer IV for the price of III I's.
The X on it's own seems a little expensive for what it is. The shopkeeper obviously has overstocked on C's as these only cost £1.20 for III of them plus the X at £2.40 in the CCCX purchase.
It's time there was some regulation to standardise pricing in this country, it's a postcode lottery, but with Roman numerals, and no lottery.
