I'm nearly ready to attempt to solder the electronics in the Tele-alike, but I haven't bought a new capacitor. Given that the old electrics are a mess, and I'm doing everything else, it seems a bit daft not to do the capacitor too.
I believe the orange drop caps are best and I can see them on Axetec's site, but I wondered if you can get them in Maplins (to save on postage!) - can someone point me to them, if they're there, all those cap choices are confusing me! I think I need a 0.047uf one, is that right? Is it worth getting the OD one if Maplin's don't have them? (I can see they have the Mylar film caps, which I've read about too!). Cheers

Can I do a quick piggyback?
What's the deal with Orange Drop Caps and the deal with bumblebees caps and what's the difference between them? Same goes for CTS pots and the other kind (think axesrus do them) |

I believe that the thing with the pots is general mechanical quality and the quality of the taper on them (ie how closely the audio taper ones approximate a logarithmic curve).
With caps I've never done a straight test between sorts. I use Orange Drops because they're bright and shiny and not very expensive. In theory it wouldn't be too hard to try a few different sorts against each other with a switch on the guitar to see what difference (if any) they make. Clare - axesrus.com do free postage on any quantity if you're just after a couple of caps. ![]()

Deedee - I have everything else, just need a cap. I haven't done any shielding as I only thought of it this morning, and hubby spent ages last night getting the pickups screwed into their respective holes (well, mainly making the holes big enough and having to make some adjustments to the pickups covers as they haven't been particularly well made!). He might let me take them out again - how important is the shielding?

I've always noticed an improvement(less hum) when I've done it. You could put some on the control cavity plate, that will help.

There's a thing you can do with a small capacitor and a resistor which means that you don't lose treble as you turn the volume control down. I think that's what deedee is referring to.

Sporky's right about the pots though...CTS parts are more durable and have a better taper than the cheaper pots.
