Assuming it's a set neck (although there is one very cheap Epi LP model which is bolt on I think, but most are set) then a fair old whack I'd have thought.
a set neck can be removed (involves lots of careful heating to soften the glue iirc) and another made to fit, but you're looking at a luthier rather than a repairer I'd have thought, and that's not going to cheap at all. ie hundreds+ I'd have thought. It might be more cost effective to sell it on and buy something with a more suitable neck. As for 'what neck' I'm not aware of standard replacement set necks, so you'd be having it made - so you could choose any shape or material you like, so maybe get out and try lots and base it on something you know you like. But yeah - sell and buy would get my vote.

the one thing that was right about my epi les paul when i had it was the neck. is there a problem with it or do you just want something different?
it definitely isn't worth the cost if its a glued in one |

As has been said above, it would be far cheaper to buy another guitar than try to replace the neck on that one, (probably including the bolt-on one that someone mentioned above IMHO)

Why on earth would you want to do that to an epi? Youd be better off selling it and putting the money you would spend on the next step up so something like a Tokai/Orville/cheap Gibbo etc etc

I have a cheapy guitar that I've spent a considerable sum on with new hardware etc that I plan on having a new neck made for when time comes for a refret...
Yes I could just buy a new guitar, but this was the first guitar I really played properly, and the only things I don't like about it are the headstock and the tacky fretboard inlay... so I can understand wanting to stick with what you know. That said for the money of a new neck from a luthier I'm guessing you could buy a fairly nice second hand Tokai which would do a lot better than an Epiphone... but sentiment is not to be sniffed at in the guitar world - I even plan on spending money trying to make my Encore sound like a real guitar someday that I don't have any other guitar projects going and plenty of cash to spend

You can buy plenty of decent necks from the usual suspects (warmouth ect). I can understand doing that to a bolt on, as it is not a major job. But a set neck guitar is serious work. A neck reset is probably more than a second hand Epi.

This kinda reminds me of trigger's broom from Only Fools and Horses
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSmSTpRUeLs 17 new heads and 14 new handles. As soon as you change a guitar such as installing different pickups or a bridge or even removing the finish a little - it will sound different and I don't think there's an empirical way of anticipating the effects (I could be wrong). To that end I view every mod as a gamble, if you're lucky a reversible one.
